Lesja - a
mountain community
80%
of the area is lying above the tree
limit. The famous mountains of Snøhetta, Sunndalsfjella,
Reinheimen and Dovrefjell, and the bird-rich mountainous wetland of
Fokstumyra are surrounding Lesja. The community is in the middle of the
national parks district, more that a half of Lesja's area falling under
the nature protection law.
All four of Norway's deer species are found in Lesja: moose, red deer,
roedeer and wild reindeer. Also moskus oxen and wolverine live in
Lesja's vast mountain areas. The partly cultivated wetlands,
Lesjaleira, down in the valley running through Lesja, are known for
their rich bird-life.
Agriculture is the main source of income in the community, about 30% of
its population being directly involved in agriculture (against 4% in
Norway as a whole). Transport, tourism and other branches of the
service sector are also important.
Lesja centre lies 3½ km from Tynnøl. There are also a
railway station, shops, post office, primary and secondary
school, kindergarden, the administrative centre of the municipality,
nursery home and laundry.
